  REVIEW:

Blood Diamond – or, as the ladies refer to it . . . the engagement ring!

It’s hard to imagine that in just one year, Leonardo DiCaprio could give two stellar performances, first in The Departed and now in Blood Diamond.  Set back in the 1990’s and based on fact, dominant African tribes kill or kidnap the weaker tribes.  The children that are kidnapped are forced to become killing machines and the adults are forced to mine diamond so they can be sold on the black market.  Danny Archer (Leonardo DiCaprio) smuggles diamonds out of Africa and learns that Solomon Vandy (Djimon Hounsou) has found a huge pink diamond and has hid it in the jungles.  Danny wants the diamond, but Solomon needs it to secure the freedom of his family.  Both join forces in what becomes an enormously powerful struggle to survive and to try to save the people that they love.

As any woman will tell you, when it comes to diamonds, bigger is ALWAYS better.  Well, Blood Diamond is huge!  Blood Diamond is a very big production, and a very good movie.  Its powerful, gripping story starts off intense and doesn’t slow down.  And its imagery is so over the top and amazing – so raw and graphic that you actually feel like you’re in the middle of a civil war, which . . . unfortunately, does include a LOT of grief and despair.  And Leonardo has now officially gone from pretty boy to tough guy – he’s an accomplished actor who really delivers in this movie.  Despite its disturbing theme and somewhat tragic story, Blood Diamond is a satisfying thriller.
